What is a Credit Union?
Credit unions are financial co-operatives and, like all co-operatives, are owned and controlled by the people who use their services. These people are members, and they all own shares in the credit union.
Credit unions, like other financial institutions, are closely regulated. All deposits, including interest, are 100% guaranteed by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba
History of Credit Unions
In 1937 Manitoba's first credit union is chartered in St. Malo Manitoba, 41 years later in 1978 Canada's first Indigenous Credit Union was founded as the Metis Credit Union and later changed its name to Me-Dian Credit Union when the board opened the bond of association to include the entire Aboriginal population. Me-Dian Credit Union, 41 years later, is still going strong and expanding through innovative technology and financial products.
