Me-Dian Credit Union Members will be receiving their new Debit Mastercard between May 2025 and May 2026. Your Debit Mastercard will replace your current debit card.

If your card expires between June 2026 and July 2026, you'll be the first to receive our new card in the mail!

Once you get your new card, begin using it immediately to activate it. Your pin will remain the same.
Note: To activate e-commerce (Online) and/or contactless payments (Interac flash / Tap), you must first complete one chip-and-pin transaction.

Think of your Debit Matercard as a debit card, but with added features so you can complete transactions that were once only possible with a credit card, such as online and in-app purchases.

Transactions made on your Debit Mastercard come directly out of your account, not on credit. Because of this, there are no due dates or payments to worry about!

Once your new Debit Mastercard arrives, simply begin using it with the same PIN as your current debit card and securely destroy your old card.

Your accounts, Online Banking services, e-Transfers, bill payments, and account history will continue to work as they do today. However, your new Debit Mastercard number will replace your current Online Banking login ID.

If your login information is saved on your device or browser, you may need to update your saved login ID using your new Debit Mastercard number. Your password/PAC (personal access code) will remain the same.

The Debit Mastercard has limited space for characters, so longer names may appear shortened. However, when completing a transaction requesting your full name, such as an online order, please enter your full name.

No additional monthly charges are associated with your Debit Mastercard: your existing account and service fees continue to apply. However, there may be fees connected to some Mastercard transactions such as withdrawals from international ATMs or foreign currency transactions.

Your Debit Mastercard can be used with many online merchants, participating retailers, and merchants worldwide that accept Mastercard.

Please note that when you use your Debit Mastercard to make a reservation, the merchant may place a hold on funds in your account in order to secure the booking and you must have sufficient funds available to cover this hold. Hold amounts vary by merchant.

It is a personal choice. The advantage of the Debit Mastercard is that funds are immediately withdrawn from your account, so you are only spending what you have. A credit card can be useful for building your credit history and provides a backup payment option in situations where debit may not be accepted or available.

The Debit Mastercard will become Me-Dian Credit Union’s standard debit card offering. As of June 2026, regular debit cards will no longer be issued by Me-Dian Credit Union.

Your Debit Mastercard can still be used like a traditional debit card for everyday purchases, ATM withdrawals, and Interac transactions.

While Debit Mastercard will become Me-Dian Credit Union’s standard debit card offering, Members will have options to customize certain card functionality based on their preferences. This may include features such as disabling online transactions.

If you would prefer to use your card primarily as a regular debit card, please contact us and we would be happy to discuss the available options with you.

Transcations, Holds, and Card Limits

Funds are withdrawn directly from the account linked to your Debit Mastercard, just as your debit card works today.

Transactions are processed directly against your available account balance. Some merchants, particularly online or international merchants, may place temporary pre-authorizations or holds before the final transaction amount is posted to your account.

This is normal and may vary depending on the merchant.

The amount on hold may be higher than the product amount, and the excess amount may be returned to the account once the payment is processed

The same daily transaction limits that applied to your previous Debit card will continue to apply to your new Debit Mastercard, including ATM withdrawal and Point of Sale (POS) limits.

Online purchase transactions made using Debit Mastercard are included within your existing POS transaction limit.

Yes, Members will have options to customize certain card functionality based on their preferences. This may include features such as disabling online transactions.

If you would prefer to disable online transactions, please contact us and we would be happy to assist.

Some merchants may apply surcharges depending on how the transaction is processed. Any merchant-specific fees are determined by the merchant.

For most in-store purchases within Canada, selecting Debit is recommended.

For online purchases or merchants requiring Mastercard functionality, select Mastercard or Credit when prompted.

Regardless of which option is selected, funds still come directly from your own account and not from borrowed credit.

Some merchants process transactions immediately, while others may take additional time to finalize and submit purchases.

This is normal and processing times can vary depending on the merchant.

Temporary holds and pending transactions may appear within Online Banking depending on how the merchant processed the transaction.

Mobile Banking App:
To view the hold on your account in the mobile banking app, log in and select your main account. Just below your account balance, tap Account Details. A dropdown menu will appear, and the hold amount will be displayed beneath your current balance.

Online Banking:
To view the hold through online banking, log in and select your main account. Below the account name, click the + symbol on the right-hand side of Account Details. The expanded menu will show the hold amount listed beneath your account number.

If you have questions regarding a hold or pending purchase, please contact us directly.

When you make certain online, international, or pre-authorized purchases with your Debit Mastercard, the merchant may place a temporary authorization hold on your account before the final transaction is processed.

This hold immediately reduces your available balance, but the actual transaction may not appear in your account history until the merchant fully processes the purchase. Hold times are at the discretion of and vary by merchant. Note that some online retailers only charge your card once your item has shipped.

When a purchase is cancelled, the merchant must release the authorization hold.

Processing times vary by merchant and may take several business days before the hold is removed from your account.

Refund timelines vary by merchant. In most cases, refunds are processed within several business days after the merchant completes the refund transaction.
